Aki Inomata + Miwa Ogasawara "Beneath the Same Sky"

MAHO KUBOTA GALLERY is pleased to present “Beneath the Same Sky,” a two-person exhibition by AKI INOMATA and Miwa Ogasawara, on view from June 27, 2025.
In this exhibition, works by two artists—based in Tokyo and Hamburg—are brought together, each offering a distinct interpretation of the “sky.”
AKI INOMATA has long focused on the creativity and intelligence inherent in the activities of non-human life forms, producing works through collaborative processes with other species. In recent years, her practice has expanded beyond living creatures to encompass themes on a grander scale, such as the global environment and natural phenomena, exploring the fundamental nature of the world we live in. In this exhibition, she will unveil a new body of work from her ongoing project. Recall the Sky of Yesterday, which she has been developing since 2020. This project uses a unique 3D printing technique of her own invention to recreate the shapes of clouds from a specific day within a drinkable liquid. It is an attempt to embody and represent phenomena such as weather and landscapes—ever-changing and in constant motion. By physically incorporating these ephemeral elements, which vanish in the next moment, the work expresses a desire to feel a sense of unity with the fleeting rhythms of nature. New sculptural pieces, stereoscopic works, and photographic works from this project will be on view.
Meanwhile, for over 30 years, Miwa Ogasawara has been painting oil-on-canvas works in subtle, layered shades of grey from her studio in Hamburg filled with clear northern light. Her paintings explore the essence of human existence, intellectual reflection, and philosophical inquiry—evoking the passage of seasons, fleeting moments of life, and deep introspection.
While her work is figurative in style, the tranquil and meditative atmosphere that emanates from her canvases offers a contemplative experience akin to abstract art, inviting viewers to sense a universal cosmic presence.
Her subtle use of color is coupled with a strong physicality in her brushstrokes, resulting in dynamic and powerful expressions. For this exhibition, she presents a large-scale series of paintings of the “sky,” composed across four canvases.
At a time of profound change and unease in the world, the sky alone remains vast and constant, watching over us. Ogasawara turns her gaze toward this majestic stillness and its limitless expanse beyond human understanding.
