Opening in 1995, this year the Chiba City Museum of Art celebrates its 30th anniversary. The exhibition “Recorded Futures Relived: CCMA and Contemporary Art” traces the diverse development of postwar art via around 180 contemporary artworks carefully chosen from among those acquired by CCMA since construction of the museum began in 1991.

A museum’s permanent collection is its very soul, and the main driving force behind its activities. Assembled through the acquisition of a vast range of expression from different eras, early modern to present day, and including art with a special connection to the local Boso region, the Chiba City Museum of Art collection rates highly in terms of both originality and importance. Exhibitions over the past three decades have sought to illuminate this collection, showcasing contemporary artworks intimately connected with wider social developments in Japan and elsewhere. From “Tranquility” in 1996, second in a series of shows celebrating the museum’s opening, to this year’s “Knock, Knock! Four Doors to Enjoying the Chiba City Museum of Art,” CCMA has staged a total of 120 contemporary art exhibitions.

Records show that the Chiba City Museum of Art has been future-oriented right from the conceptual stage of its development. Growing and maturing alongside the city of Chiba as it strives to be a place where creativity is supported and celebrated, CCMA is helping to build a more diverse, sustainable society in accordance with a philosophy of using culture to enrich people’s lives, and help craft the city and its future. We are confident this exhibition will be an opportunity to reflect on CCMA’s past, and set out a vision for its own future, as a cultural hub creating new value by growing its collection, and making thoughtful and thought-provoking use of that collection.
