SIDE CORE is an art collective that takes street culture as its starting point, and works on the theme of expanding the scope of artistic expression in public space. They have explored the possibilities of artistic expression that emerge in cities and on the streets, and produced a number of project-based works set in public spaces. Their work focuses on conferring new and fresh perspectives on these locations and their landscapes. This exhibition presents the results of SIDE CORE’ s research and production in Kanazawa and the Noto Peninsula as part of the museum’ s Artist in Residence program during FY2024. Their research in the Noto Peninsula, in particular, was conducted in the wake of the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on January 1, 2024, with the aim of deepening understanding of changes in the land that had been brought about by the disaster. Based on research on the region that has been built up to date, this exhibition seeks to address the fundamental question of what art can do in response to a crisis, showcasing SIDE CORE’ s unique perspective on public space and how art can bring about possibilities as a new kind of “bypass” (loophole) for society.
