Ceysson & Bénétière is pleased to present an exhibition dedicated to Supports/Surfaces, one of the most significant movements in contemporary French art, on the occasion of the inauguration of its new space in Tokyo. First appearing in the 1970s, this movement was created in opposition to aesthetic norms, favoring ethical creation and the exploration of unconventional materials.
In 2000, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo hosted a landmark exhibition on this movement, organized in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou and the Jeu de Paume. In recent years, Supports/Surfaces has been the subject of renewed interest—not only in Europe and the United States but increasingly across Asia.
Since this May, a major retrospective has been held at the Indang Museum in Daegu, South Korea, in collaboration with our gallery, Ceysson & Bénétière, and will run until August 13.
In the Japanese context, Supports/Surfaces resonates with the legacy of the GUTAI movement, which, since the 1950s, has explored the relationship between gesture, material, and space. Like GUTAI, Supports/Surfaces deconstructs painting to reveal its materiality and reimagines its place within society.
This exhibition presents a rare opportunity to experience a comprehensive selection of seminal works from Supports/Surfaces—many of which have seldom been shown in Japan.
