SHOJI HAMADA Memorial Mashiko Sankokan(Reference)Museum was established in 1977 by the potter Shoji Hamada, using part of his personal home, in order to share his collection of works, which he had collected with delight and benefit as a personal reference for his pottery, in the hope that the wider public may also find them a useful “reference”. It is our hope that the you can experience Shoji Hamada ‘s world view, born of a healthy rural lifestyle, in the rich natural surroundings of the museum grounds.

Center is an Alternative Space and Hostel in Tochigi / Japan run by sound artist Madoka Kouno and Experimental filmmaker Shinkan Tamaki. Our concept is “Multi-purpose space to explore” and we aim to be a base for people who want to discover a new world, a departure and arrival point for experimental artistic expression, diverse culture and information. Our goal is to be a one and only place in the world where new culture is fostered.

Gallery HEKI has mainly introduced the works of the artists who can feel firm steps, also local artists. HEKI provides the place to sensitively accept a flow of the times and to grow up new creations.

The Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts opened in 1972 as one of the first public museums of modern and contemporary art in Japan. Kiyoshi KAWASAKI designed the museum architecture including the collection galleries built in 1981.
The museum houses a collection of Japanese modern and contemporary artworks, primarily those with connection to Tochigi Prefecture. It is also notable for the works by famous artists of Western Europe such as France, England and Germany.
The collection comprises around 9000 objects, including prints, illustrated books, photographs, and crafts. We hold 4 special exhibitions a year in addition to collection exhibits rotations. In the Meissen Porcelain Collection Room, around 100 works are displayed. The exhibits from the best collection of Meissen porcelain in Japan are rotated about 4 times annually.

Located in Yasukawa-cho, not far from Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Tetsuo's Garage is neither a warehouse nor a gallery, but a former pharmacy, where exhibitions and events are organized by Anne Eastman as part of the Artist in Residency at Tredson Villa that began in 2015.

The gallery mainly focuses on post 20th century art and design with a particular focus on works that have a connection with the city of Utsunomiya and organizes 5-6 exhibitions a year on top of the permanent collection. It is designed as a low rise one floor building in order to harmonize with the surrounding 26 hectares of forestry and with a particular attention on access for disabled people.

The Ashikaga Museum of Art opened in April of 1994. Located in urban surroundings, the museum is connected to a city-run housing complex. Our aim is to give people an opportunity to be exposed to art in their daily lives, to feel it, and to think about it. We are striving to create a cultured community of humanity. By collecting and exhibiting art, Ashikaga Museum of Art introduces culture and artistic endeavor through a diverse and deep global lens.

Utilizing the Ogawa Family Residence, a nationally registered tangible cultural property, the museum was opened as the Oyama Municipal Kurumaya Museum of Art to serve as a base for local activities and a place for creativity. The museum holds about three special exhibitions a year, conducts art education and dissemination activities, conducts surveys and research, and operates a citizens' gallery. In addition, the Ogawa Family Residence (main building, earthen storehouse, front gate, and fertilizer storehouse) and garden are open to the public.

The Niki Museum, which opened in Nasu in 1994, is a unique art museum that is solely dedicated to the works by Niki de Saint Phalle, one of the most famous female artists of this century. It developed from the private collection of the present director Ms. Shizue Yoko Masuda, which was originally shown at the Space Niki in Ueno, Tokyo. Its collection covers the whole career of the artist, and the Museum is filled with the overwhelming power of the works and the passion of Ms. Masuda who dearly loves Niki and her works. The Museum moves the visitors with the positive message coming out from the works full of movement and freedom. The entrance to the Museum is a landscape garden fully representing the charm of nature in Nasu all the year round.
