The Aomori Contemporary Art Centre (ACAC) is a contemporary art institution nestled in a dynamic natural environment on the foothills of the Hakkoda Mountains. Its distinctive architecture is well-suited to the center’s three creative pillars of artist-in-residence (AIR) programs, exhibitions, and education/learning programs. Established as a project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Aomori City, the ACAC opened its doors in December 2001 and is currently run by Aomori Public University.

The ACAC is committed to fully supporting creative pursuits regardless of the artist-in-residence, whether by nomination, open call, or paid residency. Our aim as an institution is to further communicate excellence in contemporary art, construct international networks through these connections, and provide new encounters and learning opportunities between artists and residents and students in the local community. From spring to autumn, you can appreciate more than 20 outdoor sculptures on premises as you enjoy a walk through the ACAC’s lush forest.

The museum is a renovated brick warehouse that was built about 100 years ago as a brewery. The architect, Tsuyoshi Tane, designed the building and preserved as much of the building as possible under the concept of "passing on memories." Emphasizing commission work that matches the architecture and the region, the museum has formed a collection of work by Yoshitomo Nara, Jean-Michel Othoniel, and others unique to Hirosaki. The museum holds exhibitions of contemporary art that take advantage of the characteristics of the space, such as the black coal tar exhibition walls.

Towada Art Center opened in 2008 as the first contemporary art museum in Tohoku. With the theme of humanity and nature, the museum permanently exhibits work by world-renowned artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Yoshitomo Nara, and Ron Mueck. Each room displays a single work of art, giving visitors the experience of stepping inside the work. The exhibition rooms, both large and small, are connected by glass corridors, and the structure of the museum is unique in that it is like walking through an art house. Not only in the museum but also in the surrounding art plaza and shopping street, visitors can enjoy art in the entire city.

Our facilities include permanent and temporary exhibition spaces, a collaborative space, and a cafe, as well as other spaces for incorporating the community into art activities and exchange. In addition to art exhibitions, the Towada Art Center works within the community to support a variety of cultural programs.

The Aomori Museum of Art was built adjacent to the Jomon ruins at Sannai-Maruyama in order to promote art and culture from the northern Tohoku region. While viewing the rich artistic climate of Aomori Prefecture and the Jomon spirit buried in the adjacent Sannai-Maruyama ruins as a source of artistic creation, the museum will explore the original landscape of Aomori artists with their strong personalities and present Aomori's artistic climate to the world.

Work commenced on the Munakata Shiko Memorial Museum of Art in September 1974, and the building was completed in August of the following year. The Museum opened its doors to the public in November 1975 to commemorate Aomori-born woodblock print artist Shiko Munakata’s being awarded the Cultural Order of Merit (1970).The museum hopes to keep alive his works for future generations and at the same time make a useful contribution to the arts in Aomori. To this end prefectural and municipal authorities as well as many others were generous in their assistance. 　 The museum itself, located in the heart of Aomori city, is a two – storied building utilizing steel-reinforced concrete. The architecture is of the”Azekura”style, popularly adopted in the construction of temples, public treasuries and storehouses from the Nara Period until the beginning of the Heian Period. In front of the hall entrance there is an elegant garden, the beauty of which attracts visitors in every season as well as Munakata’s unique world does.
Shiko Munakata is a world-renowned woodblock print artist, but he has also made significant contributions in the fields of “Yamato-ga”(drawn in India-ink and water colors), oil paintings, and calligraphy. However, his masterpiece “Two Bodhisattva and the Ten Great Disciples of Sakyamuni” and other powerful woodblock prints, the delicately expressed “Yamato-ga”, and dynamic calligraphy works are displayed all year round, along with a print block and various tools for the better understanding of the artist and his art.
